JILL MATHIS grew up in Texas and studied photojournalism at the University of Texas in Austin.

After leaving school, Jill became full time assistant to Ralph Gibson (Guggenheim Fellow), and in the years with Gibson moved her focus from journalism to fine art photography.

Jill moved to Italy in 1996 and is married to the sculptor Valerio Tedeschi. Her principal work has been on an extensive series entitled Parallel Text in which through the symbiotic fusion of words with images, the work becomes a semantic, syntactic, communicative effort that encodes messages, recounts history, expresses ideas and captures emotions.

Returning to her journalism roots in 2008, Jill received a year long commission to document an area in Piedmont which resulted in a collaborative show in 2009 with Ralph Gibson at the Guggenheim annex in Vercelli, Italy. This work led to the creation of the continuing series Art&Industria based on some of the leading industrial companies in Italy.

In 2021, she created an offshoot of Art&Industria entitled Visionary Women which focuses on female entrepreneurs and CEOs in male dominated industrial sectors. The work was concentrated in the Verbano Cusio Ossola region and was exhibited in seven locations in 2022. Work has begun on another area of Italy with a comprehensive show scheduled for early 2023.

Jill has numerous monographs and has been included in dozens of photography books and magazines including American Photo, Marie Claire and Elle Decor. She exhibits regularly in Europe and America and her work can be found in both private and public collections among which include the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Norton Museum, the Birmingham Museum and the Delaware Art Museum. Her work has been cited in various university studies and is included in many academic collections including Columbia University, Georgetown University, University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt University and the University of Maryland.
