2022 is indeed a momentous year. As most of you know our club was founded in 1934 by a group of British citizens and was at that time called the "English Club". We still have the founding document in our archives and I have attached a copy for those of you who are interested. We were for a number of years looked after by the British Embassy in Berne and we also received invitations to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II birthday party, which was held in the grounds of the Embassy. A few years ago we received notification that the Embassy did not have the funds or the personnel to "look after us", so our link to the Embassy and to the UK are not that strong as they used to be. We have in the past few years indeed become a very international club with members from all continents! Quite amazing!
Out of respect and because of our historical ties to the United Kingdom, the Anglo-Swiss Club of Locarno has sent condolences to the British Embassy on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was indeed an icon, a very graceful, mindful and wise woman. Her sense of duty was unparalleled. We also extend our very best wishes to His Majesty King Charles III.
After our summer break we resumed our club activities with an extremely interesting outing to Boschetto on Wednesday, 7 September, followed by lunch in Foroglio. You will have received the video of the ancient wine press. The photo was taken in front of the waterfall in Foroglio.
Our September coffee morning was a great success and I would like to thank all the helpers who prepare the clubroom bring the flowers and who also treat the club members to delicious cakes, biscuits, croissants and, of course, tea and coffee. The coffee morning is one of the keystones of our club activities. A tradition in the true sense of the word. This is a gentle reminder to our club members to please attend the coffee mornings even if the there are quite a number of steps to climb you will, after the climb, be rewarded by friendly faces and lovely treats!
We also have our library in the clubroom and you are welcome to browse through the shelves and make use of our excellent selection!
Our 10'000 steps are quite popular. We walked on Tuesday, 13 September 2022 from the Parco Giochi Burbai, Muralto to Mappo and then back. In Mappo we stopped at the Approdo for coffee. What a delight to be greeted by such a nice guy who made us laugh and who was such fun!
Our next activity is the "Fish & Chips" at the Casino Locarno on Tuesday, 27 September 2022 at 6:30pm. We are fully booked but if you decide you would like to join please let me know and I will try to get some more tables.
We are well aware that after all the Covid restrictions and now that travel has resumed there is a plethora of activities in our area and elsewhere. You can now pick and choose. We still hope and wish that our members will continue to support the club and participate in what our club can offer.
In the past months several new members have joined and we would like to welcome these new members and we look forward to meeting them at one of our next events.
Very best wishes!
Anglo-Swiss Club Locarno
